Audition for the Booker T. Choir
The Music department of Booker T. Washington HSPVA is committed to providing our students with the formal instruction that will prepare them to successfully enter a program of music study at an institution of higher learning.
Music Faculty
Christian Parkess (Vocal Jazz & Composition ) is a graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington and holds a Master in Music from the University of Oregon. He is also a proud alumnus of Booker T. Washington HSPVA. He has taught and performed internationally. Dr. William George-Twyman (Director of Choral Studies) holds multiple Masters of Music, and a doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Oklahoma. He has performed internationally as both singer and conductor. Terence Hobdy (Director of Jazz Studies) holds a Master in Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas and has been a professional performer and educator for nearly 18 years. Dr. Michael Jacko (Conservatory Director, Orchestra Director) has served as conductor of the Maryland Sinfonietta and Cover Conductor of the National Gallery of Art Orchestra in Washington DC, at the university level and holds advanced degrees in music and conducting. Art Ruangtip (Director of Winds & Percussion) holds a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and his undergraduate music education degree from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville Tennessee. Steve Schrag (Director of Guitar Studies) has played in live bands and studio sessions across the nation, and maintains an active performance schedule in addition to teaching. Leonardo Zuno Fernández (Director of Piano Studies) is currently a Ph.D. candidate in music theory with a related field in musicology at the University of North Texas. He holds two masters in music from SMU, and has taught piano from the elementary to graduate level for the last 20 years. Audition Requirements and Scoring |

Vocal Audition Material |

Perform one selection from memory from one of the following choices:
o Pathways of Song (any volume) o Folksongs for Young Singers (any volume) o Any other age-appropriate classical song Students MUST bring a copy of the sheet music for their song. Perform a series of vocalizes to determine range, vocal quality, and general vocal health. Matching of pitches played on a piano. Be prepared to sight read. |
